I typically stay away from embellishments on my clothing because I find they are a little too kitschy for my taste. But since they’re a big summer trend this year, with designers sending models down the runways in everything from sequin jackets to fully embroidered ensembles, I decided to take another look and see if there was an embellishment type I could get behind.
While I’m still not sold on pieces that have massive amounts of embellishment for everyday wear, I do think pieces that have embroidery as an accent can add flair to more classic looks. Plus, it’s a great way to test the trend without committing to a piece you may never wear past this season.

Case in point: This skirt, which happens to be by one of my new favorite brands. I highly recommend checking their selection out – they do a great job of incorporating current trends into sophisticated pieces.

Stripes are the base print, so I could immediately imagine this skirt fitting into the rest of my wardrobe. The flower embroidery is eye-catching yet understated, giving the preppy print just enough of a pretty boho vibe to make it look current, and I can’t help but smile every time I look down at that little flower peeking through the skirt folds!
To keep the look fun and feminine, I paired the skirt with a tie-shoulder tank that plays off the red embroidered flower. (I also plan to wear this top with jeans and maxi skirts all year long – it’s super versatile!) I wanted to keep attention on the skirt details, so I kept the shoes and accessories low-key for this particular outfit, choosing an espadrille wedge that goes with everything and this new addition to my bag collection.
