I love wearing tights during winter, but I know that’s not the case for everyone. While they’re a great pairing for dresses and add a little lift to your backside, they can be hard to style — especially if you want to venture outside of wearing the same black pair all winter.

How do I make it work? I’ve found that having a few different pairs of tights in my cold-weather lineup makes my winter wardrobe infinitely more interesting. They come in a ton of different prints and colors, are a great alternative to pants when you want to keep your legs warm, and will instantly expand the wear-ability of your wardrobe. Suddenly, some of your favorite summer dresses and sandals can be worn when the temperature drops!

Here are some of my favorite style tights in rotation this season:

Opaque Black

Let’s start with a pair that most people already have — opaque black tights. You may be thinking, “I already know how to style those!” But have you tried them with pumps, booties and mules? Playing with the contrast of the rich black tights and fashion forward shoes really puts the shoes on display, and makes your entire look pop.

Don’t shy away from printed tights — when styled properly, they can instantly make a fashion-forward outfit! The key is to keep the rest of your look simple, so your legs really stand out. For example, wear all one color or color block your outfit so there are only a couple of other elements that draw attention.

Colored Tights

If you love black tights but want a change, add a pair of colored tights to the mix. I love burgundy and gray for fall and winter. They pair with almost all of the same looks that black tights do, but add an unexpected element of depth and surprise.
