Is it just me, or has the weather been really unpredictable this winter? Just when it seemed like spring weather was on the horizon, we were hit with a cold front here in the Bay Area!
I usually wear tights under my sweater dresses and it works perfectly for brisk days, but the recent weather has made me call in fashion reinforcements. My saving grace? Skinny jeans!
I’ve talked about how a longline top looks great with layers underneath (and how I like to wear shirt dresses over jeans), and the same style formula applies here. Whenever you want to winterize a longer upper body piece, like a dress, my solution is to add skinny jeans underneath. They’re streamlined and understated, which keeps the focus on the dress, yet add the extra warmth you need.
In addition to its on-trend mustard tone, I also love that this sweater dress has a cinched waist that accentuates my curves and keeps the overall look clean, not bulky.
To elongate the lines even further, I added a heeled bootie to complete the look. The full boot keeps my entire foot warm – a necessity on frigid days, or if it rains, and the higher heel and pointed toe visually stretch the silhouette from head to toe.
Could you pull this look off with flats? Technically, yes, but I will warn that you may run the risk of the sweater dress looking a bit too heavy with the jeans and the proportions making you look a bit shorter. However, every body is different, so definitely play with proportions and heel height to find the pieces that work best for you! Above all, stay comfortable, confident and warm.
