While this summer was full of fun, bright-colored florals, the upcoming season calls for a darker color palette. But that doesn’t mean you have to pack away your goddessy boho dresses just yet! It’s actually very easy to transition your summery favorites into fall, thanks to one simple addition you may already have in your closet: a structured outer layer, like this moto jacket, in a rich fall color.

I love the unexpected silhouette a cropped moto jacket creates when combined with a more relaxed, flowy dress like this one, which I recently found at Old Navy.

The look is feminine with the right amount of tough, cool girl chic mixed in, and it’s the perfect way to navigate the still-warm days that are transitioning more and more into cool, fall nights. I love the contrast of the soft, flowing fabric and the buttery suede of the jacket that toughens up the floral print just enough. It’s what Old Navy calls Field Day – a cozier, cooler take on summer’s free-spirited vibe – and I’m totally into it!

Whereas you’d typically pair this dress with nude or colorful sandals during the summer, you’ll want to switch up your footwear for the new season. I went with black booties because they’re a little edgy like the moto jacket, but still practical and comfy enough for running around town (and they work for the office as well). The black bag is understated to let the rest of the colors pop, both in the floral dress print and the cognac jacket.

This is just one take on the boho-esque, outdoorsy trend, but you could also try it with other summery staples you still have hanging in your closet! Try pairing your embroidered denim with chunky knits or a shearling coat with your shorter floral dresses. Or, even better, a warm flannel over a striped top! The idea is to mix and match textures and dip into deeper color tones – what better way to officially kick off fall?!
