I love attending cultural events where traditional ethnic fashion is welcome, because it gives me a chance to get creative! While I have a few traditional indian outfits in my closet- one of the perks of being married to my Indian hubby, I enjoy finding ways to mix east and west. This look is made up of an antique vest I found at a local Indian boutique, worn over an embellished midi dress I bought online, a roped belt from a grecian maxi dress, and my husband’s churidar pants from an old suit.
Here are a few tips for putting together your own Indian inspired look:
1. Don’t be afraid to go all out with accessories and color! Who doesn’t like getting all decked out like a princess?! Want to mix silver and gold? Go for it! There are lots of mixed metals in Indian wear, so mixing the two tones isn’t against the rules.
2. When it comes to finding the perfect dress to wear over your churidar pyjama or leggings, don’t be afraid to look in unique places, like the maternity section! It’s actually hard to find a non-maternity version of a dress like this, because of the way its made: fitted on top and loose the rest of the way down, with extra fabric built-in. (Right now, Asos has a couple that are perfect for creating a look similar to mine. Check them out here & here, and remember to size down if you’re not expecting, as maternity wear runs about a size big in order to accommodate a larger bust and baby bump).
3. Shop the men’s section for churidar pyjama. If you’re Indian or you’ve ever shopped for churidar, you may have noticed the one’s in the women’s section are made super slim in the legs. My solution? Get the men’s version- they’re exactly the same as the women’s, but made for larger legs.
