One of the questions I’m often asked is: how to wear prints and colors with confidence? Much like wearing white or horizontal stripes, many women are under the misconception that wearing bright, bold pieces will draw too much attention and make their bodies look larger than they actually are. Because of this, they stick to neutral, dark colors because they think they’ll look slimmer in them.
I’ve been there myself, so I totally understand where those sentiments come from. But here’s a news flash, girls: Prints and color look great on everyone — no matter what your shape or size!
While I certainly appreciate a streamlined all-black ensemble, adding some unexpected elements to your wardrobe not only look fun and of-the-moment for summer, it also allows you to infuse some creativity into your everyday look. One of my favorite places to look for beautiful prints and colorful pieces is Simply Be, the size-inclusive brand that understands that all women want amazing options, regardless of size. They have an incredible selection of apparel, footwear, swimwear, intimates… you name it — all in cool colors, bold prints, and inclusive sizing that spans from size 6 to 28! Which means that if you find something you love, it’s even easier to share your favorites with all of the women in your life — something I especially appreciate, since my sisters and I are all different sizes.
If you love prints and color on other people but aren’t sure how to pull them off in your own wardrobe, here are two versatile looks to try, plus helpful tips for making every outfit pop this summer!
Pair Prints and Colors with Neutrals
Instead of going full head-to-toe print or color, choose just one bold piece and pair it with neutrals. An easy way to pair a brightly colored or print dress, is with neutral shoes and accessories, like I’ve done here in both looks.
Balance the Focus
Another great trick for making a bold color or print look great on any body type? Choose pieces that have interesting visual details. I love the open V neckline, delicate embroidery, and fringed bell sleeves on this fuchsia maxi dress, because they instantly make the dress feel more interesting and unique than it would be otherwise. Plus, it’s the perfect pinch of color for summer, am I right?!
Accentuate Your Waistline
When wearing prints or colors, it’s also important to create a flattering shape that breaks up the look and draws attention to smaller parts of your body, as lots of flowing fabric in one color or print can often feel a little too visually overwhelming. Accentuating the waistline is my go-to trick, as it can be easily accomplished by belting or choosing a silhouette with an elasticized waist. This grid print dress fab when worn loose, but gets an extra dose of sleek, sophisticated style with its built-in waist-belt.
