Going into stores used to give me major anxiety... While everyone around me could easily shop for clothes, I was usually stuck getting creative with stretch fabrics or browsing the accessories section. As the wisdom that comes with age helps me settle into self-acceptance though, I realize that not being able to easily shop for clothes all those years is what ignited my passion for other aspects of fashion and style. And I realize now that leaving stores empty handed challenged me to get creative with getting dressed in general, which made me appreciate fabrics, prints, color and most of all: how accessories can take a look from basic to bold with a simple addition of a statement necklace and the right bag! While I love skirts and dresses, a cute top and jeans will forever be my go-to outfit, especially when the jeans are this GOOD. These are a recent @WalmartFashion find and they’re under $25! The silhouette is my fave high-waist skinny, which does wonders to define the waist and show off hips and curves no matter your shape or size, while smoothing out the tummy area as well. Best of all, they’re available in size 00-22. This quote hit me hard, and it couldn’t be more true... all my life I hated being a bigger girl; Always the tallest in the class with the biggest feet, bra in the 2nd grade, acne in the 4th, started my period in 6th, size 14 hips in 7th, the list goes on...

I spent so many years questioning WHY I was the big one amongst my 4 sisters who are all physically “perfect.” At 12 I prayed for an eating disorder so I could be thin like the models and actresses I saw on TV and in magazines. I wanted to look like THAT. So I starved myself, learned to binge and purge, abused diet pills, then started exercising excessively at 18, all because I wanted to obtain a standard of beauty I saw reflected in the media. It wasn’t until the excessive exercise and malnutrition caused my knee cartilage to deteriorate and I could barely walk at 27, that I got a major wake-up call. If I can’t walk, how would I workout to maintain the body I already had such a hard time maintaining?

After lots of self-reflection and digging DEEP, I finally started embracing my body in its natural, curvy state. 2 years after starting my recovery to self-love and body confidence, I started Girl with Curves as a way to reclaim and express love for the body I loathed most of my life.

Today over 9 years later, I get to connect with over a million women through the GWC Community, sharing my journey to achieving self-love, while proving Style Has No Size along the way.

Never in a million years did I think I could be happy in this body. Just goes to show that the thing you think is so “wrong” with you, could be what you end up embracing wholeheartedly, and you just might end up inspiring others to do the same. (Almost) Every DM Lately: You’ve slimmed down, what’s your secret? Me: Weight comes and goes, but self-care is forever. 🥰

Real Talk, friends: self-care is the most important thing you can do for yourself, especially during times of uncertainty and unrest, because that’s when your mind and body need it most.

There I was back in March juggling work, homeschooling a Kindergartner, caring for a 2 yr old, household chores and meal-prep, when I burst into tears one day. It was only 1 pm, but I was tired, burnt out and stressed, both mentally and physically. I was unhappy, uninspired, anxious and depressed. I felt stuck in the same routine of hustling on autopilot to the point of burn out for years, but everything finally came crashing down that day. I had LOST MYSELF.

I made a list of all the things I wanted to change, the things I wanted back... so many simple things I had somehow lost along the way of becoming a wife, running a business, becoming a mom...

I was going to start prioritizing self-care. I wanted to FEEL good, from the inside out. I wanted to sleep better, and finally tackle the stress and anxiety I was convinced my body had manifested in the form of constant migraines, back, neck and syatica pain.

Through lots of research, patience, time and practice, daily self-care became habit, and it felt so good! Today I’m still practicing those same self-care habits, including fueling my body with nutrients I never even knew existed, and I feel great in knowing that I’m doing everything in my power to nurture my mind and body the way it deserves. The moral of the story: Take care of yourself. What I realized after years of self-esteem building and daily effort that still continues today, is that it wasn’t my legs that held me back from wearing what I wanted — it was my lack of confidence and the belief that I didn’t deserve to wear certain things because my body didn’t look like the models and actresses I saw in the media, therefore it wasn’t worthy of praise, love or admiration, let alone wearing cute clothes. Now I wear all the things I used to be afraid of, because life is too short to be at war with yourself, and it’s way too hot to not wear the shorts!
