Can you believe we’re already more than halfway through the summer? Now that we’re back from some work trips and a family vacation, it’s finally hitting me that fall is just around the corner!
I’ve already got my eye on pre-fall trends, and while there are some good ones out there – including fresh takes on utility and fun sports-inspired stripes – the one I’m most excited about is pleats. You may already have a pleated skirt in your closet, but this year, the feminine accent is making its way into an even wider range of clothing items.
To kick off your pre-fall line-up, here are four pleated pieces to keep an eye on. Living up to their “pre-fall” moniker, they’ll transition beautifully from summer weather into fall and literally go with anything!
Breezy yet sophisticated, the pleated top adds just the right amount of visual interest to any outfit. Because the fabric has so much movement, it’s a great pick if your size fluctuates or you’re expecting, and looks as pretty belted as it does undone and flowing. You can even opt for a pleated detail, such as sleeves or a hem, for a nod to the trend without going all out.

In my book, the pleated skirt is a perennial classic that everyone should own! A single skirt can work year-round and easily be dressed up or down. The key this season is to look for fun colors, textures, and cuts that add a visual pop to your overall look.

Because there’s so much more fabric to work with on a coat, you’ll find a wider range of pleat styles: from more compact darting at the waistline or upper back to looser, flowing pleats all over the coat. Whichever you choose, pleats make outerwear immediately more eye-catching, allowing you to look polished even if the rest of your outfit is basic or low-key.

One of my favorite feminine pieces is the pleated dress, another must-have that works through the seasons. Like the pleated top, it’s flattering both belted and free-flowing and is versatile for a number of occasions. For a goddess-y vibe that will carry you into colder weather, try a maxi version of the trend: It’s a gorgeous pick for late summer weddings and date nights, and can transition to daytime with a blazer or long cardi as the weather cools down.
