If you haven’t heard of mix-and-match dressing, this fall is the time to give it a go! The original trend is inspired by mixing and matching colorful prints throughout your clothing, whether it’s pairing bright zig-zags with checkers or geometric shapes with florals. The sky’s the limit, as long as the prints visually fit together by having a color or pattern in common.
If you’re thinking “no way can I pull off wearing a bunch of different prints at once!” I totally understand it isn’t for everyone, including me! As I’ve said before, some trends are meant to be translated your own way. So while I’ve taken a cue from this trend because I love how fun and eye-catching it is, I’ve also adjusted it a bit to fit my personal style aesthetic. Mix-and-match dressing can be done in a sophisticated way, as long as you choose subtle prints that draw from the same color palette and play off each other’s themes – and, of course, if you feel like you can wear them together with confidence!
This mixed print dress is a perfect example of how the mix-and-match trend can work in real life. The three different paisley prints are bold enough to show off the trend, yet also subtle enough to look like soft floral color blocking from a distance. I found the dress at dressbarn, which I recently discovered carries sizes 4-24, with an expanded collection of trendy plus-size pieces that are budget-friendly with a slightly more sophisticated feel.
I love how a drop waist dress like this creates a ruffle effect at the bottom and has a boho vibe. It fits me differently than it does the model on the site because of my baby bump, but the silhouette is flattering nonetheless – plus, the cut is so versatile, I can wear it now and is perfect for fall with tights! To give the dress’s airy boho vibe a fall edge, I paired it with black booties, making it the perfect day-to-night look I can wear whether it’s warm or starting to cool off in the evening.
In addition to dresses, they also have a great selection of everyday tops with of-the-moment details like this off-shoulder crochet trim top in my fave shade of mustard yellow (perfect for fall!), as well as denim, like this crisp, goes-with-everything dark wash skinny.
