I’ve been having fun playing with this fall’s mix-and-match trend, which seems tricky to pull off but is actually quite easy as long as each of the patterns has a common color involved. Layering pieces in different patterns is a great way to keep your look dynamic – and it’s perfect for fall, since you’ll automatically be prepared for changing weather throughout the day!
For this look, I experimented with two of my favorite prints (polkadots and stripes) from Old Navy’s latest collection and was really excited about the outcome. The color that draws the entire look together is navy, a classic and versatile hue that works beautifully for the transition between seasons. I chose a more structured coat, which adds a bit of elegance to top it off. The resulting outfit is my ideal transitional weather look: one part nautical, as a nod to summer, combined with a more traditional preppy vibe, which is one of my favorite go-to themes for fall.
The thing that makes Old Navy’s new twist on prep special is that it keeps things more lighthearted and fun than the usual prep we’ve seen in past seasons. The combination of stripes and polka dots is playful yet effortlessly classic, especially when paired with slim fit jeans (these are on sale at Old Navy through September 21st, by the way!).
This look is a great place to start if you want to experiment with mixing layers in different prints. Once you feel comfortable with stripes and polkadots, you can try adding other fall trend patterns, like animal prints, florals, and different textures into the mix. The idea is to try new combinations that show off different parts of your personality. Fall fashion mantra: Go for it!
