7 Tips for Healthy Hair

Girl With Curves blogger Tanesha Awasthi shares 7 tips for healthy hair.

After years of color processing, damage from blow drying, straightening irons and chemical relaxers, I’ll stop at nothing to get healthy hair. But let’s be honest, it isn’t easy abiding by each and every rule! However, for most of us, the way our hair looks directly effects our confidence level, which certainly makes caring for this part of our bodies worthwhile.

Here are my 7 tips for healthy hair:

1. The Rules of Shampoo

Whether your hair is curly, straight or somewhere in-between, shampoo is simply meant to cleanse your hair, therefore over shampooing causes dryness, which is the number one cause of frizz and dullness. The solution: shampoo no more than two to three times per week, max.

When you do shampoo, it’s only necessary to cleanse your scalp, leaving the rest of your hair untouched, as shampooing strips the hair of its natural oils, causing dryness, frizz, lack of shine, the list goes on!

2. Water Temp.

Hot water, like any type of heat, blows up the hair’s cuticle (aka the outer layer shaft which directly effects hair growth), increasing frizz, so always rinse with cool water versus hot.

3. Ditch the Heat Tools

This is a tough one, especially for those of you who love a good blow dry! Using a blow dryer not only fries your hair by blowing up the cuticle, it causes breakage, which leads to split ends. If you absolutely can’t avoid using heat tools, use a good heat protector to prevent as much damage as possible.

4. Towel Drying 101

Wrapping your hair in a towel can cause major damage by roughing up the cuticle, which leads to fly aways, frizz, breakage and split ends. Instead, blot or scrunch your hair upward to remove as much water as possible before styling.

5. Upgrade your Pillowcase

If you’re prone to frizz, fly aways, and have thick hair in general, a silk pillowcase is a major game-changer. Not only will sleeping on a silky smooth surface with minimal friction help keep your blow dry or curl pattern in tact, it decreases the chance of frizz, breakage, and even helps your skin by minimizing the potential for wrinkles!

6.  Don’t Skip your Trim

Lots of people skip trims to avoid sacrificing length, but trims actually help to increase hair growth since damaged ends lead to breakage and split ends.

If you want to grow your hair out fast, without sacrificing length during each trim, ask your stylist for a dusting (so as little as possible is taken off) versus a trim.

7. Use the Right Products

Using products formulated for your hair type do wonders for the health of your hair. With so many products on the market for dry, damaged hair, I’m constantly searching for the right one to not only battle frizz, but increase the overall strength of my hair and promote shine.

I recently tried Aussie’s Total Miracle Collection 7N1 Shampoo and Conditioner and it’s honestly never been easier to maintain the health of my hair with such little effort! Both the shampoo and conditioner have 7 benefits in one, including a moisturizing frizz control system that makes my hair soft to the touch while strengthening it against damage, along with serum infusion to help detangle and promote shine. I also added the Aussie Instant Freeze Sculpting Hair Gel to my hair care routine and I’m loving the firm hold without the crunch. For those of you looking to improve the overall health of your hair without the fuss of using separate products and a hefty price tag, I highly recommend this Aussie shampoo and conditioner– they’re perfect for dry, damaged hair in need of an overhaul!
